“The most important factor in developing a
sustainable digital library is putting content
first: preserving it, providing access to it, and
ensuring its continued value and relevance as
publishing technologies and formats evolve.
Our partnership with HP BookPrep is part of
this strategy, helping us turn scanned archival
content into clean copies ready for print
distribution.
With BookPrep we can make rare, out-of-
print books from 700,000 digital files in the
University’s collection available to interested
readers quickly and affordably, through
bookprep.com and via Amazon.”

Bringing Rare Books Back into Print
BookPrep is a web service that turns raw scans of
rare, out-of-print material into high-quality books.
• Eliminates the preparation cost that has up to
now been prohibitive for very short run, on- demand
printing.
• More than half a million titles processed
to date for university libraries and independent
publishers.
Cleaning Up the Scanned Pages
of Old, Worn Books
Raw scanned images contain artifacts due to wear
and age, and new imperfections can be introduced
during the scanning process. BookPrep has developed
more than 25 patented technologies to automate
the cleaning and processing of books, including the
following enhancements:
• Yellowing and artifacts are converted to crisp,
clean white pages.
• Faded colors are restored to clarity and vibrancy.
• Pages that are skewed in the scanning process are
straightened, and page edges are detected.
• Blurred text is sharpened.
Different print qualities can be produced according to
customer preference and need. In all cases, dramatic
improvements in quality can be anticipated.

BookPrep – The Missing Link
between archival scans and
quality printed books
Millions of out-of-print books have been lost or
are collecting dust in libraries around the world.
Fortunately, these pages of our collective history and
imagination are being captured by massive book
preservation projects, scanning them into a digital
archive, page by yellowed page.
This presents an enormous opportunity for increased
public access to printed copies of rare and hard-to-
find books.
Archival scans don’t translate directly into quality
printed books; some processing is required. A reprint
of these scans will typically lack the authenticity of the
fragile original, but will reflect the aging and wear
and tear, as well as new imperfections introduced in
the scanning process. Manually cle aning scans page-
by-page is prohibitively expensive for a rare book that
might be printed and ordered in quantities as small as
a single copy.
BookPrep provides the missing link between scanned
pages and high-quality books. It makes titles available
at several levels of production value, allowing readers
both economical access to hard-to-find books and the
option to own a high-value, highest quality facsimile
of an original book. Books can be located and
ordered via the bookprep.com website, or through
one of multiple distribution channels, including
Amazon.com and content partners such as the
Hathi Trust (www.hathitrust.org)
BookPrep Print Quality:
What to Expect
There’s an enormous amount of processing involved
in cleaning the digital scans of original material and
formatting them into a print-ready file. BookPrep’s
automation of these processes allows readers to
access out-of-print titles extremely affordably. Direct
copies of scanned material are available instantly for
purchase on the bookprep.com website. As BookPrep
processes and cleans the collection, these higher
quality books, with straighter pages and sharper,
brighter text and colors are also then made available
to readers and buyers. There are some cases in
which more labor-intensive processing of scans are
appropriate. In these copies, known as Facsimiles,
BookPrep’s automated processes are augmented by
human attention, correcting errors like out-of-order
pages.

“Original editions of printed books have
an authentic emotional and aesthetic value,
whether you’re talking about an old children’s
book, historical cookbooks, or rare political
or military subjects.
BookPrep helps libraries bring old books
back to life affordably. It preserves essential
qualities: the language, illustrations, fonts.
If you can sell even ten copies of a special-
interest book that is long out-of print, that’s
ten very happy patrons you’ve created,
and new life for content that was buried in
the shelves.”
